Co-Managed IT

Co-managed IT is a partnership model in which an organization’s internal IT staff share responsibility for technology operations with an external managed services provider. The internal team keeps operational ownership of the day-to-day relationship with employees; the MSP supplies the specialized depth, 24/7 coverage, leadership, and surge capacity that a small internal team cannot staff on its own.

How Co-Managed IT Works

In a co-managed engagement, the internal IT lead typically owns Tier 1 help desk, user provisioning, and hardware, while the MSP owns escalations, 24/7 Security Operations Center monitoring, vulnerability management, compliance documentation, vCIO and vCISO leadership, and after-hours coverage. The split of responsibilities is documented in writing so both teams know exactly what each owns.

Co-Managed Versus Fully Managed IT

Fully managed IT is a full outsource — the MSP owns the entire technology stack and there is no internal IT staff. Co-managed IT preserves an existing internal IT person or team and adds external depth around them. Co-managed is the right model for a firm that values its internal IT relationship but has outgrown what one or two people can sustainably carry, particularly as security and compliance demands grow.

Why Co-Managed IT Matters for Investment & Professional Firms

Many DFW registered investment advisers, law firms, and accounting firms operate with an “IT-of-one” who is excellent at daily operations but cannot also run a 24/7 SOC, serve as vCISO, and produce examination-ready compliance documentation. Co-managed IT keeps that person while eliminating the single-point-of-failure risk and adding the regulatory depth examiners expect. DKBinnovative delivers co-managed IT to investment and professional firms in Plano, Frisco, Irving, and Las Colinas.
